Operation Brahma

Recently, Myanmar experienced a catastrophic earthquake that resulted in loss of life and widespread destruction. In response, India launched ‘Operation Brahma’ to provide urgent humanitarian assistance. This operation marks India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First‘ policy and the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, meaning the world is one family.

About Mission

Operation Brahma is a humanitarian mission initiated by the Indian Army. It involves the deployment of a specialised medical task force to Myanmar. The operation aims to provide immediate medical care to earthquake victims and support the local healthcare system, which has been overwhelmed.

Medical Task Force Deployment

A 118-member team from the Shatrujeet Brigade Medical Responders is leading the medical response. The team is equipped to deliver advanced medical and surgical care. This elite group will establish a 60-bed Medical Treatment Centre in Mandalay. The centre will handle trauma cases and emergency surgeries.

Naval and Air Force Support

Two Indian naval ships have been dispatched carrying relief supplies. The first ship set sail with 10 tonnes of aid, while the second followed with 40 tonnes. Additional ships are on standby to reinforce efforts. The Indian Air Force is also actively involved, deploying aircraft loaded with relief materials and personnel to Myanmar.

Relief Supplies and Equipment

The relief supplies include tents, blankets, food packets, and essential medicines. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has sent an 80-member team equipped with specialist tools for search and rescue operations. This team will assist local authorities in locating survivors trapped under debris.

Historical Context of Humanitarian Aid

India’s response under Operation Brahma is part of its broader strategy to be a first responder in regional disasters. Previous missions, such as ‘Operation Dost‘ in Turkey and Syria, illustrate India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance. The ethos of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ is reflected in these actions, showcasing India’s readiness to support its neighbours in times of need.
