One Lakh Tap Connections Given Daily under Jal Jeevan Mission in FY 2020-21
According to the data released by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, during the Unlock 1 phase, about 45 lakhs tap connections have been provided till date in the year 2020-2021. That comes to around 1 lakh households being provided tap connections every day. The assets being created under this mission are being geo-tagged and also the connections are being linked to the Aadhaar Number of the head of the household. The Ministry has thus ensured both speed and transparency for the Mission.
Apart from this, a dashboard has also been created to monitor the overall progress of the Mission, up to the district level. States such as Bihar, Telangana, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh lead the list of states with the maximum tap water connection being provided under this Mission. A total sum of Rs 23500 crores has been allocated for the implementation of this scheme in 2020-2021. The 15th Finance Commission has also earmarked 50% of the total grants to the Rural Local Bodies i.e. Rs 30375 crores for water supply and sanitation purposes and 50% of this amount has already been released to the states by the Central Government. This is expected to help in further planning and implementation of the program at the state / UT level.
Jal Jeevan Mission
This mission was launched by the Government of India in August 2019 with the objective of supplying 55 litres of water per person per day to every rural household through Functional Household Tap Connections by the year 2024. It focuses on the integrated demand and supply-side management of water at the local level. It is being implemented in a community approach to water and includes extensive information, education and communication as key components of the Mission. Whereas the Funding pattern is 90:10 for the Himalayan and North-Eastern States between the Centre and the states, it is 50:50 for all the other states.
