The UNESCO expressed concern about the extensive damage caused by the recent heavy rains in the Old City of Sana’a in Yemen.
About the Situation
The Old City of Sana’a was recently ravaged by heavy rains and flash floods. This is in addition to the ongoing conflict in the region, the lack of resources plaguing the country and also the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation. The UNESCO is to provide support through the EU-funded Cash for Work project.

The Old City of Sana’a is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in Sanaa, which is the largest city in Yemen. It is one of the oldest and continuously inhabited cities in the world (more than 2,500 years). It is an endangered cultural site that had been impacted by bombings in the recent past.

The Old City of Sana’a is known for its distinctive architectural style. It is known for its rammed earth and burnt brick towers that are several stories tall, above stone-built ground floors and decorated with geometric patterns of fired bricks and white gypsum.
