OIC suspends Syria’s Membership
Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the 57-member body of Islamic countries, suspended Syria from the organization. The decision was taken despite strong opposition from Iran, during the OIC summit meeting in the Saudi city of Mecca.
The OIC move has been made to put pressure on Syrian President’s regime to end violence against its own citizens. More than 20000 people have been killed so far in one of the most sanguinary civil war in the history of Arab nations. The summit of the world’s largest Islamic bloc was presided over by the Saudi King Abdullah
In 2011, Syria was suspended from Arab League for backing up violence following the massive uprising against the current regime.
Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)
The Oragnisation of Islamic Cooperation was established on September 25, 1969. The 57-member bloc has its headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The body represents 1.6 billion muslim population across the world. The official languages of the organizations are Arabic, English and French. India, despite having 10 % of muslim population in the world, has not been offered the membership of the organization.
