Background

One of the major contributions of the United Nations since it was established was empowerment and well-being of women, especially those living in rural areas. During the Fourth World Conference on Women, which was held in 1995 in Beijing, the UN suggested the creation of the International Day of Rural Women to honour the role of women in agriculture, food production and food safety. The UN declared this day on December 18, 2007. Since then, it has been observed across the globe to empower rural women and celebrate their achievements despite the struggles and stereotypes.

Significance

International Day of Rural Women recognizes the challenges faced by women in rural regions across the globe. They are often the victims of stereotyping and gender and social barriers. Millions of rural women often lack access to basic amenities that hinder them from thriving and realizing their potential. Around 40 per cent of total agricultural labour force in developing countries is women. In Asia and Africa, this figure spike to over 50 per cent. Despite this, women in this sector earn lesser salary than their male counterparts. If their earnings are increased and equal opportunities are provided, agricultural production would increase by 2.5 to 4 per cent. The international day aims to promote gender equality and empowerment of women in rural regions. It aims to provide them with equal opportunities and help them achieve their goals by addressing social and economic challenges.
