NTWB’s Inaugural Meeting

The inaugural meeting of the National Traders’ Welfare Board (NTWB), convened by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), took place on December 5, 2023, at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi. Chaired by Shri Sunil J. Singhi, the board is geared towards advancing the welfare of traders and their employees.

Objectives of NTWB

The NTWB has been instituted with specific objectives to guide the government in:

  1. Identifying policy measures for the welfare of traders and their employees.
  2. Proposing simplifications in Acts and Rules applicable to traders.
  3. Recommending measures to reduce the compliance burden on traders.
  4. Enhancing access to funds for traders.
  5. Providing recommendations on social security benefits like insurance, pension, and healthcare for traders and their employees.
  6. Offering solutions to address other problems and issues faced by traders and their employees.

Composition of the Board

The Board is composed of a Chairperson (Non-Official), up to 5 members with specialized knowledge in retail trade matters, up to 10 members representing Trade Associations, one Non-Official member from each State and Union Territory, and 9 Ex-officio representatives from Ministries/Departments. The Convener of the Board is the Joint Secretary, DPIIT, responsible for Internal Trade.

Role and Scope of the Board

The Board and its members play a crucial role in addressing issues pertinent to traders. The diverse composition of the Board reflects its ability to meaningfully tackle the wide-ranging challenges facing the retail sector.

Introduction to ONDC

The meeting also featured a presentation on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Board members were encouraged to promote this government initiative among the trader community across the country.
