NTPC commissioned 25 Megawatt floating solar PV project

NTPC Ltd commissioned the largest floating solar PV project in Visakhapatnam. It is a 25 MW project on reservoir of Simhadri thermal power station.

Key Facts

This is the first solar project that was set up under the Flexibilisation Scheme. This scheme was notified by the Central Government in 2018.

About the floating solar PV project

  • The floating solar project has a unique anchoring design.
  • It was constructed over an area of 75 acres of reservoir.
  • This project has the potential of generating electricity from more than 1 lakh solar PV modules.
  • 2000MW coal-fired Simhadri Station is the first power project that implemented an open sea intake from the Bay of Bengal which has been operational for more than 20 years.

Significance of the project

This project is significant in a manner that, it will help in lighting around 7,000 households.
