NSO Survey on Household Health Expenditure

The National Statistical Office on November 23, 2019 released its survey on Household Social Consumption related to health. The survey was conducted between July 2017 and June 2018. It was a part of the 75^th round of National Sample Survey.

The main objective of the survey was to collect data on expenditure on medicines, expenditure in hospitalization, investigation, expenditure, maternity, childbirth, etc. The data for the survey was collected from 1.13,823 households

Findings of the survey

Around 14% of rural population and 19% of urban population had their health expenditure covered. Only 1% of urban population received health insurance from government health protection schemes.

The average medical expenditure that is being spent in rural India per hospitalization case is Rs 16,676 and in urban India is Rs 26,475. The survey says that about 90% of rural childbirths and 96% of urban child births were institutional.

In rural areas, around 97% of the children received vaccination. This includes all the 8 prescribed vaccinations. Among them, 59% of boys and 60% of girls were completely immunized.

GoI is currently working under the scheme under the objective “health for all”.  It is considered as one of the world’s largest health coverage scheme. Around 100 million poor vulnerable families are included under the scheme. They are listed under the scheme based on SECC 2011.
