November 12: Public Service Broadcasting Day

Public Service Broadcasting Day is celebrated every year on November 12 as the remembrance of the first and only visit of Mahatma Gandhi to the studio of All India Radio, Delhi in 1947. During his visit to the All-India Radio station, Gandhi addressed people who were displaced after partition of Haryana and were temporarily settled in Kurukshetra. Every year, a special event is organized to observe the Public Service Broadcasting Day in the premises of All India Radio, New Delhi.

Recent Developments by All India Radio

• In January 2020, India and Bangladesh signed agreements in the field of Information and Broadcasting. Under the agreement, content from All India Radio has started airing on Bangladesh Radio Betar and similarly from the Bangladesh is being aired on All India Radio in Kolkata.
• In April 2020 in an attempt to solve problems of students during COVID-19, All India Radio started broadcasting the online classes and other academic content through its regional channels across the country on Radio, TV, and YouTube.
• Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar inaugurated a new Broadcast Auditorium of All India Radio in New Delhi in November 2019.

About All India Radio

All India Radio is a public sector broadcaster of the country established in the year 1936. It is a division of broadcasting agency Prasar Bharati. All India Radio is the one of the largest broadcasting organisations in the world in terms of the number of languages of broadcast and the socio-economic spectrum and cultural diversity served by the broadcaster. AIR originates programming in 179 dialects and 23 languages. AIR has 470 Broadcasting centres across the country. Doordarshan is also a division of Prasar Bharati.
