Noted Historian Bipan Chandra passes away

A Padma Bhushan awardee and a revered historian Bipan Chandra passed away after an extended illness. He had many feathers in his cap as he had served on many roles and profiles. He had served as Chairperson of the Centre for historical studies, Jawahar Lal Nehru University; was a member of University Grants Commission and also Chairman of National Book Trust.
Popular works
He was considered as master of economic and political history of India. Some of his famous works are “The Rise and Growth of Economic Nationalism”; “ The making of Modern India: From Marx to Gandhi” etc.He had also founded a journal named, ‘ Enquiry’ and had served on its editorial board.Many of his textbooks on History which were prescribed in many institutions across the nation. Notably his textbook on Modern India has been translated into many languages and is been used as a reference for Civil Service aspirants for over three decades. He had served as a Reader at Hindu College of Delhi University. He has left an incomplete work on Bhagat Singh and an ‘army of students’.
Condolences
Many eminent persons have expressed profound grief over his sad demise which has left a big void in the field of history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has passed his condolences to the Chandra family as he presented his deepest grief over the loss of an honoured and valuable historian. Congress President Sonia Gandhi, AAP leader Yogendra Yadav were the prominent political personalities who remembered him.
Amongst notable historians who had had long associations with Prof. Chandra, Romila Thapar, retired NCERT professor Arjun Dev, historian Nonica Datta fondly remembered his energy and unique and engaging way of teaching.
He is survived by 2 sons, he left for heavenly abode after a prolonged illness. He was 86.
