North Korea Most Unsafe for Nuclear Material Safety: NTI Report
According to a report published by the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a Washington-based group working to curb the threat of nuclear terrorism and accidents, North Korea ranked the last among the 22 countries reviewed in terms of the security of its nuclear materials. The country scored only 19 points out of a total of 100 in this report.
This is the fifth consecutive time that North Korea has ranked the last in this report since its inception in the year 2012. The handling of nuclear materials by North Korea has been the worst in the world in all these years.
Nuclear Threat Initiative Index
The NTI initiative is based on the data collected from countries with at least 1 kg or more of weapons-usable nuclear materials. This index is used to assess their level of security based on several indices, including the number of nuclear materials and sites. Also, the organization takes into stock the number of arms in the possession of any country as well and as per that, North Korea has been among the four countries that are constantly increasing the number of usable nuclear weapons.
However, it has also been stated that there is a lack of credible information pertaining to nuclear materials in North Korea.
