Former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India amid various viewpoints.
Ranjan Gogoi
Ranjan Gogoi was the 46th Chief Justice of India. He served in the role from October 2018 to November 2019. One of his notable rulings is his opinion on the Ayodhya Ram Temple case. He is the first Supreme Court Judge to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha. In the past, Supreme Court Judges have been elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Nomination to Rajya Sabha
The article 80 of the Indian Constitution provides that the President can nominate 12 members to the Upper House of the Parliament (Council of States). These members are selected from persons having special knowledge/ practical experience in the field of science, arts, literature and social service.
Powers of the Nominated Members
The nominated members in the Rajya Sabha enjoy almost all the powers of the elected members. An exception is that they are not entitled to vote in the President’s election. They can however vote in the election of the Vice President.
