Nomadic Elephant – 2023

The Indian Army contingent embarked on a significant journey to Mongolia to participate in the 15th edition of the joint military exercise called ‘Nomadic Elephant 2023.’ This annual training event serves as a platform for India and Mongolia to enhance their military cooperation, foster bilateral relations, and strengthen regional security. The exercise, scheduled to take place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from July 17-31, aims to focus on counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain under a United Nations mandate.  

Indian Army Contingent 

The contingent from the Indian Army consists of 43 personnel who have embarked on a mission to Mongolia. These dedicated soldiers represent the commitment of the Indian Army towards promoting international cooperation and building positive military relations. 

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: The Host City 

The exercise is set to take place in the capital city of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar. Renowned for its rich history and breathtaking landscapes, Ulaanbaatar provides an ideal backdrop for the training activities conducted by the Indian and Mongolian troops. This location offers diverse terrains that challenge soldiers to adapt their tactics and skills accordingly. 

Counter-terrorism Operations and UN Mandate 

The primary focus of the Nomadic Elephant 2023 exercise is to enhance the capabilities of the participating troops in counter-terrorism operations. With a specific emphasis on mountainous terrains, soldiers will receive comprehensive training to tackle complex scenarios. The exercise operates under a United Nations mandate, further emphasizing the commitment of both nations to global peace and security. 

Participating Regiment 

The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment of the Indian Army will be actively participating in the Nomadic Elephant 2023 exercise. This regiment has a rich history and expertise in operating in challenging terrains, making them valuable contributors to the training activities. 

Platoon Level Field Training Exercise 

The exercise involves a platoon level Field Training Exercise (FTX). This level of training allows for a focused and intensive approach, ensuring that participating troops can refine their skills and techniques effectively. 

Training Activities 

During Nomadic Elephant 2023, Indian and Mongolian troops will engage in various training activities to enhance their capabilities. The training program encompasses a range of activities such as stamina building exercises, quick response shooting drills, close-quarters combat simulations, strategic maneuvers in small groups, and specialized training in rock climbing techniques. By learning from each other’s experiences, soldiers from both sides will develop a deeper understanding of different operational strategies.
