NITI Aayog’s Water Management Index

NITI Aayog has drafted a new index called as the Water Management Index like earlier Ease of Doing Business index. The index’s aim is to rate states on initiatives taken by them to conserve water resources.

Rationale and Need

NITI Aayog feels that the challenge of water management is the biggest challenge and wants the states to take proactive on water management by making states to compete with each other. It wants the states to focus on sustainable development. NITIAAyog expects that in the next 5-6 decade, more than 500 million Indians would be getting into urbanisation. So, it wants to do a comprehensive planning to conserve and recycle water and create model for the states to emulate.

NITI Aayog’s Contribution

NITI Aayog has stated that it is supporting states in conversion of waste into energy. It is also supporting 10 states in conserving renewable energy. It wants to tap natural resources in an extremely sustainable manner.
