NITI Aayog’s Vision for Viksit Bharat by 2047

NITI Aayog, India’s policy think tank, is spearheading an initiative to shape the future of several states through the development of state-specific vision documents aimed at achieving a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047. The annual report for 2024-25 outlines this visioning exercise, which involves states such as Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh. Dedicated teams within NITI Aayog are tasked with assisting these states in creating comprehensive strategies that align with national objectives.

Background of the Initiative

The initiative gained traction following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on the importance of Viksit States during a governing council meeting. His call to action brought into light that the aspirations for a developed India must reach grassroots levels. This vision aims to ensure that all states contribute effectively to the nation’s socio-economic progress.

Objectives of the Visioning Exercise

  • The primary goal is to help states formulate strategies for holistic growth.
  • This includes economic development, governance improvements, and enhancing citizens’ quality of life.
  • The initiative is designed to create a cohesive framework that aligns state and national policies, promoting cooperative federalism.

State Support Mission

  • The State Support Mission (SSM) is an overarching initiative under which this visioning exercise operates.
  • Announced in the Union Budget for 2023-24, SSM aims to encourage structured engagement between NITI Aayog and states.
  • It provides a platform for states to develop roadmaps that align with national priorities while focusing on their unique strengths.

Establishment of State Institutions for Transformation

As part of the SSM, NITI Aayog is encouraging states to establish State Institutions for Transformation (SIT). These institutions serve as multidisciplinary resources to guide development strategies. To date, 26 SITs have been notified, enhancing state capacities for effective governance and development.
