Significance

  • The portal will assist the researchers in contacting appropriate organizations. It will allow the researchers to collaborate with the right institution and make their research activity more meaningful.
  • The portal will help in the growth of pharmaceutical industries.
  • It will help in industry – academia collaboration. This collaboration is essential to channelize the human resources and young talent.
  • Also, the portal will benefit the MSMEs largely.

NIPER

NIPERs is a group of national level pharmaceutical industries. These institutes operate as autonomous bodies. They operate under Department of Pharmaceuticals. Currently, they are located in seven cities of India. They are Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Hajipur (Bihar), Guwahati (Assam), Hyderabad (Telangana), Kolkata (West Bengal), Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh), SAS Nagar (Mohali, Punjab).

Proposed NIPERs

Several state governments such as Tamil Nadu and Odisha have requested to open a NIPER in their state. In 2011, the eighth finance commission had recommended to establish a NIPER in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The TN government also allocated lands of 116 acres. However, the plan was later dropped. In 2015, the then Finance minister Arun Jaitley announced that three new NIPERs are to be opened in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Unfortunately, all these plans were dropped in 2019. In 2019, Sadananda Gowda, the then Union Minister of Chemicals announced that the GoI has no plans of setting up new NIPERs for now.

Way forward

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers have requested the other leading research institutes to join the portal. This includes DRDO, ICMR, Ministry of AYUSH, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
