‘Nikarshan Sadan’ Dredging Museum

On February 23, 2022, the union minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways and AYUSH, Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated “Nikarshan Sadan Dredging Museum”.

  • The Nikarshan Sadan Museum is built by “Dredging Corporation of India”, at DCI campus in Visakhapatnam.
  • The museum displayed models of different types of dredgers, historical milestones, and vintage photos of this dredging behemoth from Eastern Port of Vizag City.

Significance of DCI in Maritime Sector

While addressing the DCI employees, minister noted that, Dredging Corporation of India is a very important organization in Maritime Sector. He noted that all the employees will have to work together as a team because expectation is high. According to him, Dredging is very significant for existence of the port and strengthening India’s economy.

Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCI)

DCI is unit engaged in business of dredging. It does dredge for Indian seaports exclusively. It occasionally dredges at foreign seaports in countries like Dubai, Sri Lanka and Taiwan. It is primarily involved in maintenance dredging. DCI carries almost all the maintenance dredging in Indian seaports, due to government regulations. It is also involved in capital dredging, land reclamation and beach nourishment. Main seaports in which DCI conducts its business include Haldia, Kandla, Visakhapatnam Port, Ennore Port, and Cochin Port.

45 years of DCI

This year, DCI is celebrating 45 years of rendering dedicated dredging services to India’s ports coinciding with “Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.

Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding (CEMS)

On the occasion, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also inaugurated a skill development facility called “Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding (CEMS)” in Visakhapatnam. CEMS will provide opportunities to youth for enhancing their skills and improving employability. Visakhapatnam facility comprise of 18 state-of-the-art labs and covers every aspect of manufacturing ranging from simulation, design, analysis and production. CEMS also has a campus at Mumbai. It supports PM Gati Shakti initiative by means skill development programs. It equips students with employable engineering, technical skills in the areas of Ship Detailed Design, Ship Hull Design, Repair & Overhaul (MRO), Shipbuilding & Maintenance, robotics, advanced digital manufacturing, and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).
