What is Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme(MATES)?
Australia has introduced a new initiative aimed at talented young professionals from India. This initiative is known as the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES). It offers Indian university graduates an opportunity to work in Australia for a duration of two years. This scheme aligns with the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA) established on May 23, 2023.
What is MATES?
MATES is a program designed for Indian nationals who are recent graduates. It allows them to gain work experience in Australia. The scheme is part of a broader effort to enhance bilateral migration and mobility between Australia and India. It aims to address illegal migration issues while promoting lawful opportunities.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for MATES, applicants must meet specific criteria. They must be 30 years old or younger at the time of application. Previous participation in MATES disqualifies applicants. Proficiency in English is essential, requiring an overall IELTS score of at least 6. Graduates must have completed their degree within the last two years from an eligible institution. Acceptable fields of study include renewable energy, mining, engineering, ICT, AI, FinTech, and AgriTech. Graduates from the top 100 universities in India, as per the NIRF 2024 ranking, qualify for this scheme.
No Employer Sponsorship Required
One important advantage of MATES is that it does not require sponsorship from an Australian employer. This allows more flexibility for young professionals seeking opportunities in Australia. The scheme encourages independent applications, making it easier for graduates to participate.
Advantages of the Scheme
Participants in MATES can live and work in Australia for up to two years. While there is no strict requirement to work in their field of study, the programme is designed to enhance skills and professional networks. MATES will initially operate as a pilot programme, offering 3,000 places annually for primary applicants. Participants can also bring dependants, who will have work rights and will not count towards the annual cap.
Duration of Stay
Visa holders have 12 months to enter Australia after their visa is granted. Once in Australia, they can stay for 24 months. The visa allows multiple entries, providing flexibility for travel. Participants can apply for an extension or a different visa for temporary or permanent residence if they meet the necessary requirements.
Visa Application Process
The visa application will be conducted through a ballot system. This random selection process ensures fairness in the application process. The ballot application fee is AUD 25. Shortlisted candidates will then proceed with further formalities to secure their visas.
