Dr. Ambedkar Samman Yojana
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has introduced the Dr. Ambedkar Samman Yojana, aimed at supporting Dalit students pursuing higher education abroad, revealed by Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP leader, at the party headquarters. The announcement coincides with the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, indicating a strategic move to engage voters.
Purpose of the Scheme
The Dr. Ambedkar Samman Yojana intends to cover all educational expenses for Dalit students admitted to prestigious international universities. This includes tuition fees, travel costs, and other necessary expenditures. Kejriwal stated that the scheme is designed to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder Dalit students from achieving their educational aspirations.
Political Context and Criticism
Kejriwal’s announcement aims to honour Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, advocating for the rights and education of Dalit communities. However, the BJP has accused the AAP of misleading voters, denoting previous unfulfilled promises regarding similar schemes. They argue that the earlier initiative, launched in 2019, lacked adequate funding and transparency.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi reinforced the AAP’s commitment to education, noting that the government has allocated 25% of its budget to this sector over the last decade. She asserted that the new scholarship programme aligns with Ambedkar’s vision of educational empowerment for Dalits, enabling talented individuals to pursue their dreams without financial stress.
BJP’s Response
The BJP has labelled the new scheme as a mere rebranding of past initiatives. Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva expressed concerns regarding the effectiveness of the previous scholarship programme, which allegedly disbursed only ₹25 lakh while spending on promotional activities. He has called for accountability from Kejriwal regarding the past scheme’s shortcomings.
