New Pamban Bridge

On April 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the New Pamban Bridge in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. This event coincides with Ram Navami, marking milestone in India’s infrastructure development. The bridge, measuring 2.5 kilometres, enhances connectivity between mainland India and Rameshwaram Island. It reduces travel time for trains from 25-30 minutes to just under five minutes.

Overview

The New Pamban Bridge is the first vertical lift bridge in Asia. It replaces the old bridge, built in 1914, which was closed in December 2022 due to severe corrosion. Constructed at a cost of ₹535 crore by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the new bridge is designed to accommodate faster trains and increased traffic.

Engineering Features

This bridge incorporates an electromechanical system to manage maritime traffic. It can be lifted in five minutes, operated by a single person. The bridge has a maximum speed limit of 75 km/h, except for the vertical lift section, which is limited to 50 km/h due to safety regulations.

Safety and Operational Challenges

The lifting mechanism is sensitive to wind conditions. It cannot operate when wind speeds exceed 58 km/h, a common occurrence from October to February. This limitation presents challenges for operational efficiency during certain months of the year.

Historical Context

The old Pamban Bridge was the sole connection to Rameswaram until a road bridge was built in 1988. The new bridge restores vital rail connectivity, which is crucial for both local residents and tourists visiting the pilgrimage site of Rameswaram.

Inauguration and Future Plans

The inauguration will include the launch of a new train service between Tambaram and Rameswaram. The Prime Minister is also expected to address a public meeting in Rameswaram. The redevelopment of the Rameswaram railway station is ongoing and is expected to be completed by September 2025.
