New Metro Corridor Approved for Delhi Region
The Union Cabinet has recently approved the metro corridor, which includes the Rithala-Narela-Nathupur (Kundli) stretch, aiming to enhance connectivity in the National Capital Region (NCR) as part of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) Phase-IV expansion.
Project Overview
The corridor will span 26.46 kilometers, which is estimated to cost ₹6,230 crores. Completion is expected within four years. The new line will include 21 elevated stations and extend the existing Red Line from Rithala.
Connectivity Improvements
The corridor will improve transport in northwest Delhi. Key areas served include Narela, Bawana, and Rohini, which will also connect Ghaziabad to Nathupur in Haryana. This connection aims to ease traffic congestion in the region.
The project seeks to reduce vehicle pollution. Enhanced metro services will encourage public transport usage. This shift can lead to decreased road traffic. Improved air quality is a potential benefit.
Expansion into Haryana
This project marks DMRC’s fourth extension into Haryana. Previous expansions include Gurugram, Ballabhgarh, and Bahadurgarh. The new corridor will integrate Haryana’s transport network with Delhi.
Implementation and Governance
The project will be executed by DMRC, which operates as a joint venture between the central and Delhi governments. This collaboration aims to ensure efficient project delivery.
The Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor is expected to set a precedent, which may stimulate further metro projects in the NCR. Enhanced connectivity can boost local economies and development.
