New Chemical Reference Material

Six new and rare Reference Materials (RMs) have been indigenously developed by the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL). RMs are the purest form of chemical that is required in all WADA-accredited laboratories across the world for anti-doping analysis.

Overview:

  • In less than a year, the six RMs have been indigenously developed by NDTL in collaboration with the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu, and the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER)-Guwahati.
  • Anurag Thakur, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports launched the RMs during NDTL’s 15th Governing Body Meeting.
  • By creating these RMs, NDTL has become one of the few labs across the world where such RMs have been developed.
  • These RMs are needed for anti-doping analysis and are not readily available around the world.
  • Till now, India has been importing RMs from Australia and Canada. Hence, the development of these RMs will be crucial for the country.

About the research work

To develop these RMs, the research work started last year after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by NDTL with CSIR-IIIM-Jammu and NIPER-Guwahati. The MoUs were signed to indigenously develop and synthesize, over a period of 2 to 3 years, twenty RMs of prohibited substances. The government of India also contributed to the development of these materials.

Out of the six, in collaboration with CSIR-IIIM, Jammu, and NIPER-Guwahati, three were developed. Scientists of NIPER-Guwahati and NDTL last year also succeeded in synthesizing two indigenously developed RMs.

How will these RMs help?

These materials that were launched will ensure that the anti-doping testing is improved so that in India, the promotion and implementation of anti-doping programmes can be done in a proper manner.
