Nepal’s Urmila Chaudhary Wins Global Anti-Racism Award

Urmila Chaudhary from Nepal received the Global Anti-Racism Championship Award. This prestigious award was presented by Antony J. Blinken, the Secretary of State. It recognizes six leaders for their bravery and commitment to racial equity and human rights. Urmila stands out for her relentless fight against systemic racism and her dedication to the rights of marginalised communities in Nepal.

Urmila Chaudhary’s Background

Urmila Chaudhary is an abolitionist and labour activist. At 17, she was rescued from child servitude. This experience shaped her life’s mission. She co-founded the Freed Kamlari Development Forum. This organization empowers former bonded labourers. Urmila has established 42 cooperatives to support these individuals. She is currently studying law to strengthen her advocacy against injustice.

The Kamlari System

The Kamlari system was prevalent in the Western Terai region of Nepal. Under this system, girls and young women were sold into indentured servitude. Parents often sold their daughters due to poverty. Contracts would bind these girls to wealthier, higher-caste families for one year. This practice perpetuated systemic inequality and exploitation.

Legal Developments

On September 10, 2006, the Supreme Court of Nepal ruled that the Kamlari system was illegal. The court stated that former kamlaris had the right to compensation, education, and rehabilitation. This ruling aimed to protect the rights of victims and address the injustices they faced. However, the interim government failed to implement the court’s decision effectively.

Abolition of the Kamlari System

In June 2013, the Nepalese government officially abolished the Kamlari system. This decision followed sustained public pressure and advocacy. The government also agreed to a 10-point plan. This plan included measures for compensation, rehabilitation, and justice for victims of abuse. The abolition marked an important victory for activists and former kamlaris.

Impact of Urmila’s Work

Urmila Chaudhary’s efforts have had a profound impact. She has raised awareness about the rights of marginalized castes and ethnic communities. Her work has inspired many to join the fight against systemic racism. By establishing cooperatives, she has provided economic opportunities for former bonded laborers. Urmila’s dedication continues to influence the landscape of social justice in Nepal.

Urmila is committed to her advocacy work. She aims to create lasting change for the most vulnerable populations. Her studies in law will enhance her ability to challenge injustices. Urmila’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of grassroots movements. She exemplifies the fight for equality and human rights on a global scale.
