Nepal celebrates Democracy Day

Nepal recently celebrated its Democracy Day. Every year, Democracy day is celebrated on Falgun 7. Falgun is the calendar of Nepal. Nepal celebrates Democracy Day to commemorate the end of autocratic rule in the country. The country was under the rule of the Rana dynasty for more than 104 years.

Nepalese Democracy Movement

The Nepalis overthrew their Rana King taking inspiration from the Indian independence movement. In 1949, a communist party was set up and the goal of the Nepal Communist Party was to establish democracy.

Role of India in Nepal’s Democracy

When India became the union in 1947, Nepal refused to join India. Tribhuvan of Nepal was anti-Rana and was operating secretly. As the news reached Rana that Tribhuvan wants to establish democracy in Nepal, his life was at risk. Thus, he fled to India in 1950. Nehru welcomes him. With Nehru’s help, a formal agreement was signed among Tribhuvan, Ranas, and Nepali Congress. This was called the DELHI ACCORD. According to the agreement, all three parties agreed to create a democratic constitution in Nepal. After this. Tribhuvan returned to Nepal. Their return after the signing is marked as Democracy day in Nepal.

Treaty of Sugauli

This treaty is defining the border between India and Nepal to date. The treaty was signed by the Shah dynasty. The Ranas were the core rulers of the Shah dynasty. India and Nepal are in dispute regarding the borders defined by the treaty. The treaty says that the Kali river will act as the international border. However, the river has changed its course with time. This led to a boundary dispute between the countries.
