NEHHDC Establishes Ashtlaxmi Haat for Northeast Arts and Crafts
The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) is setting up a dedicated marketplace and residency in Guwahati to boost incomes for regional artisans.
Introducing Ashtlaxmi Haat
Named after Ashtalaxmi, the eight Hindu goddesses of wealth, the ₹7.6 crore Ashtlaxmi Haat aims to showcase handicraft diversity from Northeast India’s eight states.
The complex will house 24 permanent handicraft stalls for master craftsmen along with an accommodation center for visiting artists.
Spotlighting Rich Traditions
From intricate Manipuri pottery to sprawling Mizo landscapes on canvas, Ashtlaxmi Haat promises to reveal the area’s prized living heritage to locals and tourists alike.
It provides the artisans a direct city outlet bridging them to contemporary consumers seeking authentic ethnic wares.
The residency component lets craftspeople from remote hills and villages stay during sales exhibitions.
Preserving Livelihoods
The NER handicrafts sector employs over 200,000 people through cottage enterprises that are increasingly unviable today.
By organizing a fixed, state-sponsored guild in Guwahati, NEHHDC strives to modernize business avenues benefiting small producers.
