NCRB Report: Accidental and Suicidal Deaths in India – Farm suicides decline

The National Crime Records Bureau released the “Accidental and Suicidal Deaths in India report” on November 8, 2019. According to the report, the suicides in the cities were 10.6 in 2015 and it reduced to 10.3 in 2016. The data was released for 36 states and Union Territories and 53 metropolitan cities.

Highlights of the report

  • Around 8.684 deaths occurred due to natural forces. Out of this, 38.2% were due to lighting, 8.9% were due to floods and 15.4% were due to sun stroke.
  • Out of all the accidental and suicidal deaths 43.4% were due to traffic accidents, 7.3% were due to drowning, 10.2% were due to sudden deaths, 5.6% were due to poisoning, 4.1% were due to accidental fires.
  • Around 4,09,537 persons died in accidental deaths in 2016

Highlights of the report: Farm Report

  • Number of farmers who committed suicide in the year 2015 were 8,007 and in 2016 the number came down to 6,270
  • The suicides of farm workers increased from 4595 in 2015 to 5109 in 2016
  • Maharashtra had the highest number of farmer suicide followed by Karnataka, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Chattisgarh.
  • The major cause of farmer suicides was indebtedness. Apart from this the other reasons were illness and alcohol addiction.

The report published was for the year 2016. Data collection for the year 2017 and 2018 accidental and suicides have begun in July 2019 and will be published by December 31, 2019.
