NCRB data on Suicides due to Unemployment

According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, from 2016 to 2019, suicide cases due to unemployment have increased by 24 per cent.

Key Findings of report

  • As per NCRB, 2,851 people died by suicide due to unemployment in 2019.
  • This figure has increased from 2,298 suicides in 2016.
  • Karnataka registered the greatest number (553) of suicides due to unemployment in 2019.
  • Karnataka is followed by Maharashtra with 452 cases and Tamil Nadu with 251 cases.

Covid-19 led unemployment

NCRB report pertain to data before Covid-19 hit the country caused further job losses in last two years. As per chief executive of Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), over 10 million Indians have lost their jobs amid second wave of Covid-19. Pandemic has also led to decline in income of households by 97 per cent.

Suicides among children

NCRB data also suggests that, more than 24,000 children in age group of 14 to 18 years have died by suicide in between 2017 to 2019. Suicides due to failure in examination stands at 4,000.

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)

NCRB is an Indian government agency to collect and analyse crime data in accordance with the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL). It was set-up in 1986 to act as repository of information on crime & criminals. This agency is headquartered in New Delhi and works under Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). IPS Ramphal Pawar is the current Director of NCRB.
