Nature-Based Solutions for Coastal Cities’ Resilience
The increasing challenges of flooding and climate change have prompted coastal cities like Mangaluru and Chennai to adopt nature-based solutions (NbS). A recent report by the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) advocates for these strategies to enhance urban resilience. The report marks the urgent need for sustainable urban planning in response to environmental degradation and vulnerabilities.
About Nature-Based Solutions (NbS)
Nature-based solutions leverage natural processes to address urban challenges. They include strategies like wetland restoration, rooftop greening, and permeable pavements. These methods aim to restore ecosystems while providing practical benefits such as flood mitigation and improved biodiversity.
Current Urban Challenges
Mangaluru and Chennai face urban challenges. Both cities have seen a decline in green spaces and increased encroachment on natural water bodies. Extreme weather events have further exacerbated these issues, revealing the limitations of traditional grey infrastructure like stormwater drains.
Key Findings from the CSTEP Report
The report assessed 23 wards in Chennai and four in Mangaluru. It found that rooftop greening could expand NbS areas by 76% in Chennai and 80% in Mangaluru. Additionally, permeable pavements could improve stormwater drainage capacity by 5%, which would help reduce surface runoff and flood risks.
Economic Viability of NbS
CSTEP’s cost-benefit analysis shows that investing in NbS is not only environmentally beneficial but also economically viable. In Chennai, an investment of ₹2,203 crore could save ₹505.31 crore annually in avoided flood damages. In Mangaluru, a smaller investment of ₹172.97 crore could yield ₹11.62 crore in annual savings.
Implementation Strategies
The report proposes a phased roadmap for implementing NbS. This includes engaging local communities, raising awareness, and initiating pilot projects. Policymakers are encouraged to embed NbS within climate resilience strategies. Updating urban planning regulations and directing funds toward NbS projects are critical steps.
Importance of Community Engagement
Involving local communities is essential for the success of NbS initiatives. Community engagement can encourage a sense of ownership and enhance the effectiveness of projects. Local governments are urged to take the lead in piloting scalable NbS initiatives.
