National Zero Measles-Rubella Elimination Campaign 2025-26
India has launched a nationwide campaign to eliminate measles and rubella by 2026. This initiative was revealed during World Immunisation Week. As many as 332 districts reported zero measles cases and 487 districts reported zero rubella cases from January to March 2025. The campaign aims for 100% immunisation coverage for children.
Objectives
The primary goal is to eliminate measles and rubella. The campaign seeks to achieve high vaccination coverage, aiming for over 95% in every district. This will ensure community immunity and protect vulnerable populations.
Importance of Vaccination
Measles and rubella are highly contagious viral diseases. They can lead to severe health complications and even death. Vaccination is crucial to prevent these diseases. The campaign offers two doses of the measles-rubella vaccine free of charge to eligible children aged 9-12 months and 16-24 months.
Strategies for Implementation
The campaign will employ several strategies. These include:
- Public Awareness: Engaging communities through information materials, including posters and radio jingles.
- Frontline Worker Engagement: Mobilising health workers to reach remote areas and educate families about the importance of vaccination.
- Surveillance Systems: Maintaining effective surveillance to monitor and respond to outbreaks promptly.
Achievements and Recognition
India has made progress in reducing measles and rubella cases. In 2024, there was a 73% decline in measles cases and a 17% reduction in rubella cases compared to 2023. The country received the Measles and Rubella Champion Award in 2024 for its efforts in disease prevention.
Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP)
The UIP is the world’s largest vaccination programme. It protects against 12 vaccine-preventable diseases, including measles and rubella. The programme reaches millions of pregnant women and newborns annually, reducing under-five mortality rates.
Role of Technology
The U-WIN digital platform has been introduced to streamline vaccination processes. It records vaccination events, generates certificates, and allows appointment bookings. This technology enhances the efficiency of the immunisation programme.
Community Involvement
The campaign encourages community participation. Local leaders, including MLAs and MPs, are urged to promote vaccination. This grassroots approach aims to ensure that no child is left unvaccinated.
Future Goals
The focus remains on achieving complete vaccination coverage. The government aims to sustain efforts and maintain high population immunity. Continuous public engagement and education are essential for overcoming vaccine hesitancy.
