National Strategy on Additive Manufacturing

Ashwini Vaishnaw, MeitY, Communications & Railways, and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MOS Electronics & Information Technology and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship announced the National Strategy on Additive Manufacturing to cater to the next generation of digital manufacturing and also aiming to mitigate the immediate disabilities which are being faced by the local industries.

Overview:

  • MeitY is looking to increase the share of India to 5 percent in global additive manufacturing within 3 years. It also hopes to add USD 1 billion GDP by that time.
  • According to the National Strategy for Additive Manufacturing, India is aiming to reach certain goals by 2025, which includes 50 India-specific technologies for machines, materials, and software, 100 new additive manufacturing firm start-ups, and 500 new products.
  • Through these start-ups and new opportunities MeitY is looking to provide jobs to at least 1,00,000 new skilled workers over a three-year time period.

What is additive manufacturing?

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a method of creating prototypes or models of products that are functional by laying down layers of materials such as resin, plastic, metal, thermoplastic, ceramic, or fiber. The model to be printed is created by the computer using software, which then sends instructions to the 3D printer.

What should be the strategy for additive manufacturing?

According to MeitY’s national strategy, India must implement additive manufacturing or 3D printing in all sectors, including defense and the public sector, so that the nation can stay ahead in the additive manufacturing or 3D printing sector. To lead this mission, an apex body consisting of subject matter experts as well as leaders from global and local industries might be established.
