National Startup Awards 2023

On India’s lively National Startup Day, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) revealed the winners of the prestigious National Startup Awards 2023. From 84 outstanding finalists spanning industries like agritech to insurtech, 20 groundbreaking startups took home top honors across 15 diverse categories.

Examples of Winning Startups

Some examples of awarded startups:

Defense Tech: Axial Aero – Provides advanced aerospace systems for defense needs.

Handicrafts: Country Clay – Offers luxury ceramic products showcasing different Indian states’ art forms.

Healthtech: Blackfrog Technologies – Developed Emvólio, a portable medical cold chain device for medicines like insulin.

Climate Tech: Atsuya Technologies – Helps companies achieve sustainability goals with AI and IoT.

The startups hailed from various parts of India, helping highlight regional pockets of innovation.

Spread of Innovation Evident

The wide range of award-winning startups, from defense tech to sustainability, highlights the proliferation of innovation across India. Strong representation from Tier 2/3 cities was also seen, showcasing emerging pockets of entrepreneurship.

Announcing Startup Maha Kumbh 2024

Adding to the exhilarating atmosphere, Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced an upcoming milestone – the Startup Maha Kumbh in March 2024. This monumental gathering of entrepreneurs, investors and innovators aims to further catapult India’s startup ecosystem to new heights.

Applications and Locations

While 2,324 startups applied this year, submissions were 12% lower than the 2,604 received in 2022. Most applications came from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

Women Entrepreneurs

Notably, 20% of selected startups have women founders, double the percentage from last year.

Sustainability Focus

11% of applicants strongly focus on sustainability – in climate tech, renewables, waste management etc. – underscoring increased attention on conscious innovation.

Sectoral Spread

In terms of sectors, startups spanned healthcare, agritech, edtech, fintech, food and beverages, AI and more. Healthcare and life sciences attracted the most applications.

Emerging Cities Shine

40% of winners hailed from Tier 2/3 cities, proving the diffusion of startup growth beyond traditional hubs. This aligns with wider trends of rising entrepreneurship in emerging cities.
