National Handloom Day: 7th August

The country is going to observe the 6th Edition of the National Handloom Day on 07th August 2020 in order to recognize the importance of the textiles sector in the country. The day also highlights the importance of the handloom sector in the country and also serves as a way of women empowerment in the country. The first such day was celebrated in 2015.

Details

On this occasion, the Ministry of Textiles is going to conduct a function through the virtual platform in order to avoid any kind of public gathering in the country owing to the COVID 19 pandemic. The Union Minister of Textiles, Smt. Smriti Irani will be the Chief Guest of the function. Also, representatives from various other handloom clusters across India, NIFT campuses, Weaver Service Centres, National Handloom Development Corporation, Handloom Export Promotion Council, etc.

Background

The day was chosen as the National Handloom Day in order to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on this date in the year 1905 in order to promote the use of indigenous clothes in the country. The main objective of this day is to create awareness about the Handloom Industry amongst the public at large and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the weavers.

Indian Textile Sourcing Fair

On this occasion, Handloom Export Promotion Council is organizing this fair which will be open on 7, 10 and 11th August. It has also generated considerable interested among the international buyers. Exquisite Patolas, Paithanis, Iktas, Kandangis, Maheshwaris and other GI-tagged products will be in display for the international buying community so that they source their products from the masters themselves.
