National Film Heritage Mission Project reviewed by I&B Minister

Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar reviewed Ministry’s prestigious project of National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM) and various activities undertaken under the project in a meeting held at National Film Archives of India (NFAI) in Pune, Maharashtra.

Key Highlights

Minister notified that film condition assessment work of nearly 1.32 lac film reels has been completed and now preventive conservation work will start soon and after that Digitisation work will start.

Once restoration work is completed, this treasure of Indian Films can be made available to Film Lovers all across world with help of Information Technology (IT).

For safely storing of this National Treasure, there was a need of space thus Government is setting up new preservation facilities (vaults) at 3 acres of land given by Film Institute of India where films can be stored safely.

The heritage Jaykar Bungalow adjoining to NFAI building is restored completely and will be inaugurated next month.

About National Film Heritage Mission

It is a film condition assessment project by I&B Ministry under which almost 1.32 lakh film reels at National Film Archive of India (NFAI) will be assessed and preserved for future use, as per global standards.

It seeks to preserve, conserve, digitize and restore India’s cinematic heritage.

Government has allotted budget worth Rs.600 crore for this project.

Nodal agency for implementation of this project is NFAI.

Features: NFHM will undertake-

• Film condition assessment and preventive conservation of around 150,000 film reels
• Digitization of around 3500 films, picture & sound
• Restoration of around 2000 landmark films of Indian cinema
• Construction of Preservation and Conservation facilities (vaults), training and workshops
• Creating a comprehensive Web-based End to End IT solution
