National Digital Livestock Mission
The draft of the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM) has been announced by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying. On this occasion, Dr. Balyan, Animal Husbandry Minister, said that the livestock sector is the backbone of rural livelihood in a unique way. Growth would have been much better if there had been a concerted effort to harmonize programs across the country to create an ecosystem conducive to the growth in this sector.
Objective of this programme
- The main objective behind the use of NDLM is to keep the welfare of the farmer as main point.
- The livestock sector is about to take a big leap after the introduction of NDLM, a digital platform jointly developed by NDDB and DAHD and has been based on the Information Network for Animal Productivity and Health.
- The goal is to create a technology-enabled, farmer-centric ecosystem where farmers, with the right information, can earn better income from raising livestock.
- NDDB engages in and motivates dairy farmers in multiple sources of income through various alternative activities aimed at diversification of livelihoods and economic prosperity.
Bedrock of NDLM
The basis of NDLM will be the unique identification of all farm animals, which will form the basis of all national and state programs, including international and national trade. Farmers will have easy access to markets through this digital platform regardless of their location or their farms, as a multitude of actors in this ecosystem will be connected. This system will also include robust systems for nutrition, animal husbandry, disease control programs, disease surveillance and a traceability mechanism for animal products and the animals.
