‘National Cancer Registry Programme Report 2020’ released by ICMR estimated an increasing trend

‘National Cancer Registry Programme Report 2020’, released by the Indian Council of Medical Research raised concern over the assumption of increasing cancer cases in India by 12% in the next five years.

Key findings

  • The report estimated 1.5 million people are going to suffer from non-communicable diseases by 2025.
  • Cancer caused by tobacco will contribute to about 27% of the total cases. It will be followed by the gastrointestinal tract and breast cancer.
  • The most common locations of cancer in men are lung, mouth, stomach, and esophagus and in the case of women, it is breast and cervix uteri.
  • The highest occurrence of cancer in India was noticed in the Northeastern region.
  • The Population-Based Cancer Registry of Delhi recorded the maximum proportion of childhood cancers.
  • The incidence of cervical cancer is on the decline.

ICMR

The Indian Council of Medical Research is the umbrella organization for the formulation, coordination, and promotion of biomedical research. It was established as  Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA) in 1911 and renamed as ICMR in 1949.

National Cancer Registry Programme

The National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) has been in operation since 1982. Its main objective is to understand the brief overview of patterns of cancer in different corners of the country and the estimation of the cancer incidences.
