National Broadband Mission launched
The Union Minister for Communications, Law & Justice and Electronics and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad launched the National Broadband Mission (NBM) in New Delhi on Tuesday, 17th December 2019 and also launched the logo of the National Broadband Mission along with a booklet.
The National Broadband Mission is structured on three principles- universality, affordability, and quality, that will fulfill all aspirations of the peoples by providing fast track growth of digital communications infrastructure in the country, that will bridge the digital gap and facilitate affordable and universal access of broadband services across the country.
Some of the major objectives of the Mission are: to provide broadband services to every village in the country by 2022, implementing 30lakh route km of optical fiber cable and to increase the tower density from 0.42 to 1.0 tower per thousand of the countries population by 2024, develop a Broadband Readiness Index(BRI) to measure the availability of digital communications infrastructure and its policy ecosystem within states and union territories, creating digital fiber maps for the digital communications infrastructure and network that will include optical cables and towers as well from across the country, etc.
The National Broadband Mission in the coming years will envisage investment from stakeholders of USD 100 billion(Rs 7lakh crore) including Rs 70,000 crore from the Universal Service Obligation Fund.
