National Achievement Survey 2021 report
The National Achievement Survey 2021 report was released by the Union Ministry of Education.
What is National Achievement Survey?
National Achievement Survey (NAS) is a national-level assessment survey conducted to evaluate the progress and learning achievement of school students. It provides a system-level reflection on the effectiveness of school education and is useful to chalk out new educational policies. The survey is undertaken by the Ministry of Education. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) developed the Assessment Framework to assess the competencies attained by the students vis-a-vis learning outcomes.
National Achievement Survey, 2021 was conducted in November 2021 with a sample size of 34 lakh students in classes 3, 5, 8, and 10. The selection of sampled schools is based on UDISE+2019-20 data.
What are the findings of the National Achievement Survey 2021?
NAS has registered a dip in performances across subjects and grades at the national level as compared to the last achievement survey conducted in 2017. This shows that the pandemic had affected teaching and learning.
Punjab was the best performer in India across all grades and subjects. Punjab has the highest mean score for subjects across Classes 3, 5, 8, and 10. Delhi recorded a dip in performance since 2017 and is lagging in performances in all three subjects—Languages, Math, and Environmental Studies (EVS)—at the primary level. Delhi is among the five states with the lowest average score in Math and Language at the primary level. However, at the Class 8 level, Delhi registered better performances.
