NASA’S WISE Mission Captured Black Hole’s Wildly Flaring Jet

Utilizing NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), Astronomers captured uncommon data of a flaring black hole, enlightening fresh particulars about these dominant objects and their glowing jets

  • Scientists analyse jets to find out further about the intense environments around black holes. Much has been well-read about the stuff feeding black holes, called accretion disks, and the jets themselves through studies using X-rays, gamma rays and radio waves. But main measurements of the brightest part of the jets, located at their bases, have been hard in spite of decades of work. WISE is presenting a fresh door into this absent link through its infrared notice.
  • The black hole, called GX 339-4, had been detected previously. It lies more than 20,000 light-years away from Earth near the centre of our galaxy. It has a mass at least 6 times greater than the sun.
