NASA Studies New X-ray Binary System

NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) has recently investigated the X-ray binary system Swift J1727.8-1613, also known as Swift J1727. This system consists of two stars in orbit, one collapsed into a black hole after exhausting its nuclear fuel.

The X-ray binary system formed when one star underwent a supernova explosion. This event led to the collapse of the massive star’s core, creating a black hole. The black hole’s strong gravitational pull attracts material from its companion star.

Accretion Disc and Jets

As the material is drawn towards the black hole, it forms an accretion disc. The intense friction within this disc generates heat, resulting in a glowing corona near the black hole’s edge. Some of the heated material is expelled as powerful jets that travel at nearly the speed of light.

It allows scientists to observe the behaviour of matter around black holes, despite the black holes being invisible themselves.
