Names of Mathematicians for the Fields Medal 2014 announced
The names of four outstanding mathematicians for the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics, have been announced.
The Fields Medal is given by the International Mathematical Union to between two and four mathematicians under the age of 40 at the International Congress of Mathematicians, held once every four years. The award intends to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement for existing work and for the promise of future achievement.
The four 2014 Fields Medalists:
- Artur Avila: For his most noteworthy research is in the study of chaos theory and dynamical systems.
- Manjul Bhargava: For his contribution to number theory and algebra.
- Martin Hairer: For his researches on stochastic partial differential equations.
- Maryam Mirzakhani: For her work on the geometry of Riemann surfaces.
