Nagaland’s High-Level Committee on Restructuring & Re-organisation of State Police
Nagaland government has set up a high-level powered Committee to look into the restructuring and re-organisation of Nagaland Police to improve its functional efficiency and effectiveness. The Restructuring and Re-organisation Committee of Nagaland Police will be headed by DGP Nagaland Rupin Sharma and eight other members, who will review the existing structure and functioning of the Police Department in totality.
Objective of the Committee
The Committee will suggest reorganisation in the larger public interest and better security. It will examine the allocation of resources, the restructuring and reorganisation, recruitment and training of Nagaland Police. Allocation or re-allocation of manpower and resources, redistribution of posts in geographical basis and coordination of State police with other central and state law enforcement and security agencies will be the focus of the Committee.
Best Practices and Report Submission
The Committee will analyze policing strategies in ten other countries that could be adopted or adapted to suit the specific needs of Nagaland. If necessary, the Committee can invite additional members to assist with its work, and it aims to present a report within 60 days from the 27th of April notification.
The Current State of Nagaland Police
Nagaland Police is predominantly armed police centric with the NAP-IR Battalions and armed branch comprising almost 75%. The State Police has grown in numbers but there is an urgent need to make it more efficient on functional and operational lines so that it can effectively deal with current problems as well as for the future.
War on Drugs
Over the last four months, Nagaland Police has conducted an anti-drug campaign to combat drug-related activities, which involved arresting offenders and dismantling drug distribution networks. In accordance with the Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan program launched by the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister, Nagaland State Police has successfully registered 101 cases and apprehended 143 criminals from different areas of the North-eastern region.
