Nagaland’s Directorate of Minority Affairs

The Nagaland Government has recently established a new Directorate of Minority Affairs under the Planning & Transformation Department to manage schemes and programs related to the educational, economic, infrastructural, and special needs of minorities. The move was approved by the cabinet on April 6th, 2023.

Department Details

The Directorate of Minority Affairs falls under the Planning & Transformation Department, which aims to facilitate the overall development of the state by promoting economic growth, effective resource utilization, and sustainable development.

Management of Minority Schemes

The new directorate will manage the various schemes and programs under the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs related to the educational, economic, infrastructural, and special needs of the minorities. This includes the management of scholarship schemes such as Pre-Matric, Post-Matric, and Merit-cum-Means based Scholarship Schemes, which will be responsible for providing financial assistance to students from minority communities.

Educational Schemes

The Directorate will take up educational schemes such as Maulana Azad National Fellowship, Naya Savera, Padho Pardesh, and Nai Udaan. These schemes provide free coaching and interest subsidy on educational loans for overseas studies, among other things.

Economic Development

For the economic development of minorities, the Directorate will manage schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan, Nai Manzil, and concessional credit through National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation. These schemes aim to provide economic assistance to individuals and communities from minority backgrounds.

Infrastructure Development

The Directorate will also manage the Pradhan Mantri Jan Yikas Karyakram, a program for the development of infrastructure projects in all districts. The program aims to improve the infrastructure and living conditions of minority communities.

Support to Institutions

The new Directorate will provide support to institutions such as the Maulana Azad Education Foundation and National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation. The support will ensure that these institutions can effectively provide assistance to the minority communities they serve.

Special Needs

The Directorate of Minority Affairs will also handle special needs schemes such as Nai Roshni, Hamari Dharohar, Haj management, and research, monitoring, and evaluation of development schemes. These schemes aim to provide assistance to individuals from minority communities with special needs.
