Myanmar President Visits India: India-Myanmar sign 10 MoUs

On February 27, 2020, the Myanmar President U Win Myint visited India. During his visit, India and Myanmar signed 10 MoUs in different sectors.

Highlights

The leaders signed agreements on Repatriation and Re-integration of Victims of trafficking, Quick Impact Projects, Development of Rakhine State, etc. They also signed Memorandum of Understandings on construction of schools, roads, water supply systems and solar power systems.

Rakhine State

The Rakhine State of Myanmar is the region of ongoing conflict between buddhist community and Rohingya community. The Conflict began during world war II. During World War II, the Rohingya Muslims fought along side British against the Rakhine Buddhists in return of a separate Muslim state.

The current Myanmar Government is facing international condemnation including the United Nations. And is hence finding ways to develop the region. The agreement aims to help Myanmar develop the state of Rakhine.

It is to be noted that India has joined hands with the Myanmar Government in building Sitwe port and the port is situated in the state of Rakhine. The port is also a part of the Kaladan Multi Model Transit Project.
