Music says a lot about Your Personality: IIIT-H

The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad has developed a machine learning model that can take into account the moves of the listeners in order to predict their personalities and cognitive styles. It is a milestone development in the music cognition research in the country. This proves just like the physical gestures, the gestures to music also say a lot about the personality of a human being.

Background

Previous music research already pointed out an association between dance movements and personality traits, especially in the extraversion and neuroticism dimensions. But this time, it has been confirmed and according to the scientists leading this research, the natural swaying of the body and movement is a common response to music and based on the movements of an individual to music, the listening experience of the listeners can be enhanced. This can also lead to predict the kind of songs that a person may like.

In the study, the idea was to study music-induced movement patterns that could indicate individual traits that can further be linked to music preferences and recommendations. The study has also been recognized by the International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference.

Overall, this study can lead to advanced research in the field of autism.

The study was a collaborative effort between the Department of Music, Arts and Culture, University of Jyvaskyla, Finland and the IIIT Hyderabad. The model used was the big five model in which the personality of somebody is ranked in terms of one’s openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.

IIITs are higher education institutions created for education in information technology. There are five IIITs operating in the country. These are managed by the Ministry of Human Resources Development and they have been established in the public-private partnership model. These organizations have been granted the status of Institutes of National Importance by an act of Parliament.
