Current Scenario
During the election of the standing committee, Mayor Shelli Oberoi was attacked. BJP-AAP members entered into the clash.
The root cause of the clash goes back to the unification of the municipal corporation.
Root Cause of the clash
The three municipal corporations were facing a financial crisis. According to the BJP, the main objective of the unification is to reduce the funds spent on the salaries of employees in the municipality. If unified, the number of employees can be reduced greatly. Also, there would be a balance of resources, funds, etc. Now, this is the economic benefit. What about the political advantages? The BJP campaigned saying it can solve the financial crisis if voted to power again. The unification will help BJP to lift Delhi municipality from its economic issues. Basically, the centre wants more financial and administrative power over Delhi.
