Mount Harriet

The Mount Harriet is located in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was renamed as Mount Manipur in October 2021. It is the third highest mountain the archipelago.

Why was Mount Harriet renamed?

The mountain was renamed to pay tribute to the freedom fighters of Manipur. The Manipur warriors played a huge role in 1857 revolt. To this the Britishers reacted by hanging the war hero of Manipur publicly. They were General Thangal and Yubraj Tikendrajit. The freedom movement couldn’t be crushed even after this incident. The Britishers then sent Maharaja Kulachandra Dhwaja Singh and other twenty-two freedom fighters to Mount Harriet. The Government of India is to construct a memorial in Mt Harrier to honour the freedom fighters.

Who was Harriet?

Harriet was the second wife of a British Army Officer Robert Christopher Tytler. He was an administrator of the Convict Settlement at Port Blair. Harriet is known for her work in documenting monuments of Delhi. She is remembered for her notes during the 1857 revolt.

About Mount Harriet

The Mount Harriet is one of the National Parks of India. It was made a national park in 1969. It is a butterfly hotspot. Negrito are the tribal community living in Mount Harriet. They are hunter gatherers.
