MoHUA announces India’s Top 11 Cycling Pioneers’

11 cities across the country have been awarded by Government of India with the prestigious title of being Top 11 Cycling Pioneers of India.

Highlights

  • This India Cycles4Change Challenge first season saw 107 cities around the country come together to scale-up learn and test various cycling-friendly initiatives which will kick-start the cycling revolution in India.
  • Top 25 cities were shortlisted earlier in 2021 and the jury of renowned international and national transport experts have selected the top 11 cities across the country that will be receiving an award of Rs 1 crore each which will be used by them to scale up various cycling initiatives.
  • Four cities (Aurangabad, Gurugram, Jabalpur and Silvassa), received a special mention by the jury for the efforts put in by them in testing the pilot initiatives of the challenge.
  • The Top 11 winning cities were announced via an online event. They are Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Kohima, Nagpur, New Town Kolkata, PimpriChinchwad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara and Warangal.
  • First Challenge report and an Online Exhibition showcasing the cycling journey of the cities were also released.
  • The second season of this Challenge will commence from the month of August 2021 and the Smart Cities, cities with a population of over 5 lakh and capital cities will be able to send their applications.
  • The top 25 cities will advance to the next stage where they will embed various policies, city-wide plans and dedicated departments will be set up for further the cycling revolution of India.

The First Challenge Report

The first report titled The Dawn of India’s Cycling Revolution has been launched in this event. This report celebrates the efforts of the cities’ in the Challenge and gives an indication of future plans. This report has documented the key milestones which have been achieved by the cities and their upcoming plans.

Launching of an Online Exhibition

MoHUA has launched an Online Exhibition which showcases the journey of the top 25 cities in this competition. The cities have launched various initiatives and have also transformed their streets to become cycling-friendly through their enthusiastic efforts, exemplary leadership and effective collaboration with the citizens of the respective cities.
