Mizoram launches Green-Ag project

Mizoram government has launched Green-Ag project, funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF), aimed at catalyzing sustainable transformation of Indian agriculture without compromising the food security and income safety for the farmers.

Highlights

Mizoram is one of the five states where the said project is being implemented apart from Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. Mizoram has been endowed with various elements of natural bio-diversities and it is required that the natural resources there are utilized in s sustainable manner. This is aimed at maintaining the optimum equilibrium between ecosystem and economic development. The project will be implemented in Dampa Tiger Reserve in Mamit district and Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary in Lunglei district in the state.

Expected Consequences

The project will serve the purpose of improving the system of agriculture in the state, provide upliftment to the people of the focus area with awareness on conservation of IUCN endangered species and critically vulnerable flora and fauna in the state. The local people will be benefitted by bringing a paradigm shift in forest management to provide a better ecosystem services, conservation of biodiversity and reduction in human-wildlife conflict.

Global Environment Facility

It is an independent financial organization and is a multilateral financial mechanism that provides grants to developing countries for projects that benefit global environment and promote sustainable livelihoods in local communities. It was set up as a fund under World Bank in 1991. In 1992, it was shifted as an independent body. It addresses mainly six designated areas – biodiversity, climate change, international waters, ozone depletion, land degradation and persistent organic pollutants. The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change is the focal point for GEF in India.
