Mission Amrit Sarovar Progress

Mission Amrit Sarovar was launched in April 2022 to combat water scarcity in India. As of January 2025, the initiative has successfully constructed or rejuvenated over 68,000 ponds, far exceeding its initial target. The mission aims to create 75 ponds in each district, totalling 50,000 nationwide. This initiative plays important role in improving water availability, promoting environmental sustainability, and enhancing community well-being.

Objectives of Mission Amrit Sarovar

The mission’s primary goal is to address the pressing issue of water scarcity in rural areas. It focuses on constructing and rejuvenating ponds to ensure sustainable water sources. The initiative is part of India’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience.

Phases of Implementation

Mission Amrit Sarovar is executed in phases. The first phase has already achieved milestones. The upcoming Phase II will emphasise community participation. This phase aims to ensure the sustainability of water resources for future generations.

Collaboration and Support

The mission involves collaboration among various government departments. Eight central ministries contribute to its execution. These include the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Water Resources. Additionally, technical support is provided by the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Application and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N).

Utilisation of Technology

Geospatial data and technology play a vital role in the mission. They assist in identifying suitable locations for pond construction and rejuvenation. This technological integration enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of the initiative.

Progress and Achievements

As of January 2025, over 81,000 Amrit Sarovars have been identified, with more than 66,000 completed. The achievement of the national target puts stress on the mission’s dedication and operational success. States like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are making notable progress towards their district-specific targets.

Challenges and Resource Mobilisation

Despite the successes, some states face challenges in meeting their targets. Resource gaps are addressed through various existing schemes. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and state-specific initiatives provide essential funding and support.

Community Engagement and Participation

Community involvement is a mainstay of Mission Amrit Sarovar. The initiative encourages local participation and collaboration with NGOs. This engagement encourages a sense of ownership and responsibility among citizens.
