Ministry of Tourism sanctions 18 North East Development Project
The Ministry of Tourism on December 3, 2019 sanctioned 18 projects under the schemes PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan. The Ministry has also allocated Rs 1456 crores for the projects.
Highlights
In order to develop the North Eastern region as a tourist destination several projects are being initiated. The Ministry has released television campaigns on private channels in the country and on Doordarshan. Also, numerous television commercials and films are being used as publicity material. The Ministry also organizes International Tourism Mart annually in the North Eastern region. It has also provided complimentary spaces to the North Eastern States to increase their participation in India Pavilion set up by the ministry.
The amount sanctioned will further help in developing the above initiatives. Apart from these, the allocated fund will also be used for development of wildlife circuit, development of Heritage circuit and development of Kamakhya Temple and other important pilgrimage destination in the region.
Significance
Today Tourism contributes to 10% of world GDP. It is also the highest generator of jobs. One in every 12 jobs is generated by the Tourism sector. In India tourism contributes to 6.23% of total GDP and generates 8.78% of total employment.
